Quick answer:A strong resume summary is 2–4 lines stating your title, years of experience, top skills and one quantified result — with the job's key keywords up front. Pick the closest example below, swap in your numbers, and keep it under ~60 words.
Jump to the examples ↓The 3-part formula for a strong summary
Every good resume summary answers three things, fast:
- Who you are — your job title and years of experience or specialty (e.g. “Data-driven Marketing Manager with 6 years…”).
- What you're great at — 2–3 skills that match the job posting's keywords (for skills you genuinely have).
- Proof — one quantified achievement (a %, a $ figure, a number) that shows impact, not just duties.
Keep it to 2–4 lines. Put the job's most important keyword near the front — it's what both the recruiter and the ATS look for first.
Weak vs strong: a before/after rewrite
The fastest way to improve a summary is to swap vague adjectives for specific, quantified claims. Here are three vague summaries rewritten into ATS-friendly ones — notice how each rewrite adds a title, a number and the keywords a job posting actually looks for.
Marketing Manager
✕ Weak
“Hard-working marketing professional with experience in many areas of marketing. Team player who is passionate about helping companies grow and always willing to learn new things.”
✓ Strong
“Data-driven Marketing Manager with 6 years scaling demand-gen across SEO, paid and email. Grew organic traffic 140% and lowered CPA 30% on a $500K budget. Skilled in HubSpot, GA4 and conversion optimization.”
Why it works: The weak version is all adjectives and no proof. The rewrite names a title, years, the channels a job posting lists as keywords, and two hard numbers a recruiter can trust.
Software Engineer
✕ Weak
“Motivated developer looking for a challenging role at a forward-thinking company where I can use my skills and grow as a professional while contributing to the team.”
✓ Strong
“Full-stack Software Engineer with 4 years building scalable web apps in React, Node.js and PostgreSQL. Shipped features used by 200K+ users and cut API response times 40%. Focused on clean, well-tested code.”
Why it works: The weak version describes what the candidate wants. The strong version describes what they have done — concrete stack keywords plus measurable impact, which is what both the ATS and the hiring manager scan for.
Customer Service Representative
✕ Weak
“Friendly and reliable worker with good communication skills and a positive attitude. I work well with others and am dedicated to providing great customer service every single day.”
✓ Strong
“Customer Service Representative with 4 years resolving 60+ inquiries daily at a 95% CSAT score. Skilled in Zendesk, de-escalation and upselling that grew add-on revenue 15%. Focused on first-contact resolution.”
Why it works: Soft-skill claims like ‘good communication’ carry no weight on their own. Anchoring them to volume (60+ daily), a score (95% CSAT) and a tool (Zendesk) makes the same claim credible and keyword-rich.

Targeting part-time, co-op or first roles: lead with your major, GPA if strong, and any hands-on projects.
“Third-year Computer Science student (3.8 GPA) with hands-on experience building three full-stack projects in React and Python. Completed a 200-hour coding bootcamp and tutored 15 peers in data structures. Seeking a part-time developer or internship role to apply problem-solving skills on a real product team.”

Executive / C-suite

Led two successful platform re-architectures and a SOC 2 Type II program. Strategic leader who aligns product, engineering and revenue around measurable outcomes.”
Returning to work after a gap
Frame the gap positively and re-anchor on current, in-demand skills.

Frequently asked questions
What is a resume summary?
A resume summary is a 2–4 line snapshot at the top of your resume that states who you are professionally, your years of experience or specialty, and one or two of your strongest, quantified achievements. It replaces the outdated 'objective' for most candidates and gives a recruiter (and the ATS) the most important keywords first.
How long should a resume summary be?
Two to four sentences, roughly 40–60 words. Long enough to include your title, experience level, key skills and one measurable result; short enough that a recruiter reads all of it in the six seconds they spend on the first scan.
Resume summary vs objective — which should I use?
Use a summary if you have any relevant experience — it leads with what you've achieved. Use an objective only when you're a complete beginner or making a sharp career change with no related experience, since it states what you want rather than what you've done. Even then, frame it around the value you'll bring.
How do I write a resume summary with no experience?
Lead with your strongest transferable skills and any proof of them — coursework, internships, volunteering, part-time work or projects. Name the role you're targeting, the skills the job posting asks for that you genuinely have, and your motivation. See the 'No experience / first job' example above as a template.
Will a resume summary help my resume pass the ATS?
It helps, because the summary sits at the top where it can carry the job's most important keywords — and keyword match is the single biggest factor recruiters filter on. But the ATS reads your whole resume, so the summary only works if the rest parses cleanly too. Paste your resume into the free checker below to see your keyword match and any parsing issues.
